Butler Passed Hors D’Oeuvres and Stations
Written By: Lauren

Last week we gave our advice for the number of passed hors d’oeuvres for a cocktail reception. Today we thought we would give you our recommendation for a combination of butler passed hors d’oeuvres and stations.

Here are a few scenarios to consider:

  1. If you offer your guests a carving station, you should still also have at least 5 passed hors d’oeuvres to alleviate the pressure from the station.
  2. If you have 2 or more stations, you can cut down on the number of passed hors d’oeuvres, but we wouldn’t recommend to go below 4.

Remember to also always consider how long your cocktail reception will be. If it’s a shorter amount of time (30 minutes) you can get away with less food. If your cocktail reception is longer (1 hour+) you definitely need to have larger quantities of food.

Butler Passed Hors D’Oeuvres

What is a good amount you ask? Well here is the MHW standard.

  • 1.5 hour cocktail reception – 8 pieces per person
  • 1 hour cocktail reception – 6 pieces per person
  • 45 minute cocktail reception – 4-5 pieces per person
  • 30 minute cocktail reception – 3 pieces per person

Pieces per person means that you should have 6 hors d’oeuvres for each person to eat. Say you have 100 guests, that means you should have 600 pieces for a 1 hour cocktail reception. You can either have 100 pieces of 6 different hors d’oeuvres or 150 pieces of 4 different hors d’oeuvres.

Are you doing stations as well? We will go over our suggested cocktail hour quantities for a combination of  butler passed hors d’oeuvres and stations next week.
